FAQs on prescription drug rehab at our specialist clinic

What are the benefits of detox and withdrawal therapy at our prescription drug rehab clinic?

Irrespective of the addictive substance, the individual therapy, intensive psychotherapy and medical expertise we offer ensures you have the very best chance of taking permanent control over your addiction at our prescription drug rehab clinic. What we offer:

  • A qualified treatment programme for withdrawing from any addictive medicine
  • Therapy for multiple dependencies and mixed use with alcohol, other medicines and drugs
  • A multiprofessional medical team qualified in internal medicine, neurology, psychiatry and psychotherapy
  • Concurrent treatment of accompanying and underlying psychological, neurological and internal disorders
  • A structured and individual therapeutic concept with intensive psychotherapy in individual and group sessions
  • Gentle withdrawal management with reduced withdrawal symptoms
  • Utmost discretion with the option of admission under an alias

How long does prescription drug withdrawal take at our clinic?

The withdrawal period depends primarily on the substance used. Withdrawing from benzodiazepines usually takes longer, for example, due to the sometimes very long half-life (time taken for the drug to halve in quantity) and depot effect. The dose taken, the duration of use, age, and symptoms of the pre-existing illness also influence the duration. A clearer assessment concerning the duration of withdrawal can therefore only be made after taking a full medical history. A withdrawal period of several weeks to months is basically to be expected, however.

How severe are the withdrawal symptoms?

The severity of the withdrawal symptoms always depends on the individual and the substance. Rebound phenomena such as inner restlessness, depression, anxiety, sleep disorders and – in the case of opiates and opioids – increased pain sensitivity, are highly likely. Nevertheless, there is no need to be afraid, as the symptoms can largely be eased through a gradual withdrawal process accompanied by medication and other therapies.

How are the withdrawal symptoms eased?

To keep the withdrawal symptoms to a minimum, the addictive drug is gradually withdrawn. If withdrawal symptoms still develop, they can be alleviated with the aid of additional medication. We administer low-strength neuroleptic agents and remedies for gastrointestinal complaints and headaches, for example, none of which are addictive. Furthermore, patients gain additional relief from therapies such as biofeedback and neuroelectric stimulation (NES). In the event of accompanying conditions/comorbidities, such as depression, an appropriate medication will of course be prescribed and the condition will be monitored accordingly.

Why should abrupt withdrawal (cold turkey) be avoided?

For the sake of simplicity, attempts are often made to take control and abruptly stop taking an addictive substance at home. This is strongly discouraged due to the occasionally severe withdrawal symptoms and high failure rate. Abrupt benzo withdrawal is particularly problematic, for instance, as a depot will have built up in the fatty tissue, significantly prolonging the withdrawal process and the withdrawal syndrome. The safest and gentlest way is to gradually reduce the dose under medical – preferably inpatient – supervision and to alleviate the withdrawal symptoms with non-addictive medication.

Can prescription drug rehab take place anonymously at our clinic?

Many people are ashamed of their prescription drug dependence and would prefer as few people as possible to know about their addiction and the required treatment. To account for this, we can admit patients to our prescription drug withdrawal clinic for rehab incognito, i.e. under an alias. Patients can then decide for themselves who should know about their rehab. Not even our staff will know their real name unless necessary for administrative reasons.

What happens to the pre-existing illness when the medication is withdrawn?

People who take addictive medicines long-term usually have psychological issues that will not simply disappear as a result of withdrawal therapy. Therefore, it is important to consider the respective clinical picture when treating the addiction. Multimodal pain therapy can be used to relieve chronic pain, for example; aside from psychotherapy for depression and anxiety, switching to a non-addictive antidepressant that can continue to be taken after rehab would be beneficial.

Are family members involved in therapy?

People with depression or anxiety disorders are especially reliant on a supportive, sympathetic and stimulating environment. We therefore attach great importance to thoroughly involving the family so that they understand their relative’s condition and can offer step-by-step support on the road to recovery. For this purpose, we offer family seminars, joint discussions under the guidance of a therapist, and optional family constellation therapy.

How does our prescription drug rehab clinic prepare patients for life after therapy?

Our relapse prevention programme ensures that the patients of our My Way Betty Ford Klinik return to their daily lives thoroughly stabilised. Based on standard situations that pose a high risk of relapse, we train you to deal with potential risks and stresses in serious situations without jeopardising the success of rehab therapy. In this context, a stress test can also be performed.

How likely is a motivational crisis?

Motivational crises and “treatment setbacks” are a normal part of rehab therapy and are encountered by many addicts. To ensure that they do not result in premature discontinuation of therapy, it is essential to deal with potential problems appropriately. The personal therapist and relevant doctor should therefore be consulted without delay and help should be sought. After all, most crises are easy to overcome with constructive dialogue and, if necessary, additional medication. Moreover, since the withdrawal symptoms lessen from day to day, light soon becomes visible at the end of the tunnel.

What happens outside of therapy time?

Our prescription drug rehab clinic works by the principle of personal responsibility and motivation; transparency, trust and responsibility are our utmost priority. You are therefore free to organise your leisure time as you wish. Except at the start of treatment, when you should remain on the clinic grounds in the interests of your own safety, you can leave our rehab clinic whenever you wish for excursions during your leisure time.

How can I fill my leisure time?

Relax with a good book or audiobook in your modern, comfortably appointed single room or immerse yourself in the luxury of the Vital Spa & Garden of the Dorint Hotel nearby; take walks or cycling tours around Bad Brückenau or in the Rhön Mountains; play table tennis, badminton or volleyball on the grounds of our clinic; or visit the baroque cities of Fulda or Würzburg. There are plenty of leisure activities – the choice is yours!

What happens next, after treatment at our prescription drug rehab clinic?

Due to the addictive memory, a substance use disorder can never be completely cured, irrespective of the substance in question, and will remain with the person concerned their entire life. The only way to successfully manage the condition is permanent abstinence. To prevent relapses or a transfer addiction, outpatient aftercare with a therapist specialised in addiction is therefore essential. For this purpose, our prescription drug rehab clinic works with a large network of partners and aftercare therapists. We can gladly make an initial introduction to a therapist for you near your home, depending on their availability, and help you find an appropriate self-help group.

The services of our private clinic are aimed primarily at private patients and direct payers; in some cases, a proportion of the costs for detoxification may be covered by public health insurers on a voluntary basis. Reimbursement of the costs for physical detoxification by private health insurers is not usually problematic, as our prescription drug rehab clinic is classified as a rehabilitation hospital or facility in accordance with Section 107 I of Book V of the German Social Code (SGB V). We can gladly assist you with the application relating to professionally assisted rehab.
